Sydney is blessed with some of the world’s most beautiful ocean and outdoor pools. Dotted along the coast and harbour, they’re a stunning place to swim and often boast a long history. However, the city’s public swimming pool network isn’t big enough to accommodate Sydney’s growing population and a number of residents are left wanting.
The cost of swimming fees, time restrictions and overcrowding in local pools can quickly add up. For many residents, investing in a pool in the backyard is a great way to get a regular swim and add value to their home.
Having your own swimming pool is a beautiful, relaxing and healthy lifestyle choice. Swimming is great for all ages and can improve joint mobility, balance, strength and cardiovascular fitness. It also helps relieve stress and anxiety, reduces heart disease, improves sleep, and promotes good posture.
For those who don’t have a private pool, swimming at one of the city’s amazing public pools is a popular and accessible pastime. There are six outstanding aquatic centres, located throughout the suburbs of Sydney. These include Manly, Mosman, Cronulla, and Sutherland.
Cronulla’s Sutherland Pool, located in the town centre, is an open-air pool with an impressive water slide and a large grassed area to relax at. There is also a kids’ splash pool and a kiosk. It’s not hard to see why this pool is a favourite with the community.
The Bondi Icebergs, at the top of Bondi Beach, is probably Australia’s best-known ocean pool. Originally built in 1929, it’s a great place to swim and enjoy the views of the famous rocky cove below. If you want to make a day of it, combine your swim with the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk or try out some of the beach’s other highlights such as the bright white lap pool and famous Bondi Icebergs Club.
If you’re after a more tranquil location, head down to the north end of Sydney Harbour to find Mahon Pool, an idyllic ocean pool set among rock outcrops that provide spectacular views and a sense of seclusion. Steep steps lead down to the inter-tidal pool and it’s a fantastic spot for snorkelling. Further south, in Maroubra, the Murray Rose Pool (formerly Redleaf Beach) is a safe harbourside tidal pool, easily accessible from the western end of Double Bay.
The tidal pool at Wylie’s Baths in Coogee, founded by champion swimmer Henry Alexander Wylie in 1907, is a stunning location for swimming with raised decking built into the cliffs and beautiful 180-degree ocean views. There’s also Coogee’s McIver’s Ladies Baths, a historic ocean pool exclusively for women dating back to the 1880s.
