When you think of Hong Kong, shopping or dim sum may come to mind, but swimming might not. Thankfully, it turns out this superlative city is dotted with picturesque pools. From a natural infinity pool on a mountainside to the world’s highest pool at the Ritz-Carlton, here are Hong Kong’s top swims.
With the summer heat upon us, it’s time to head to the pool. Swimming is not only a fun way to cool down, it’s also an excellent form of exercise and a great stress-reliever. Whether you want to swim laps in the Olympic-sized main pool, practise your dive skills in the diving pool or let your little ones have a splashing good time, there are plenty of pools to choose from across the city.
Located in Wong Chuk Hang, this massive complex is one of the most popular public pools in the city, especially for families. You can spend the day practising your strokes in the three leisure pools, soaking up the sun in the open air or playing in the two kids’ pools featuring water features and sprinklers. Rates are HK$17 on weekdays and HK$19 on weekends, but those above 60, children aged 3 – 13, students or people with disabilities can enjoy a discounted or free entrance rate.
The Peninsula, famous as a shopper’s paradise, is also home to one of the most show-stopping indoor pools in the city. With marbled Roman columns and striped lounge chairs, this pool is the epitome of luxury. Swimming here is a bit like stepping into a Gatsby movie, so prepare to be dazzled by its stunning design.
Located in the heart of the CBD, YMCA Bridges Street Centre was the first indoor swimming pool built in Hong Kong and is still going strong nearly 100 years later. With its huge windows and dazzling lights, this pool is a beautiful sight to behold, especially when it’s lit up at night. The pool offers a wide range of facilities for all swimmers, from beginners to advanced, as well as training and competition pools. In addition, the YMCA’s facilities include a sauna, steam bath and Jacuzzi.
