The winners of the Singapore Prize 2022, a global environmental award founded by Britain’s Prince William, were announced on Monday (Nov 7). The five winning projects will receive funding and support to scale their solutions. These include access to potential investors and mentors, workshops, and dialogue sessions with local leaders.
A total of 63 teams submitted their ideas for the first-ever Dreams Asia Breakthrough Prize, launched in May last year. After a rigorous judging process, the shortlisted projects were provided with seed funding to further develop their concepts and prototypes over six months. They also had the opportunity to take part in a boot camp featuring laureate speakers and other mentoring sessions.
Makbul Mubarak’s autobiographical film “Autobiography of a Disappeared Muslim” took home the top prize at the inaugural Dreams Asia Breakthrough Prize ceremony on Tuesday (Nov 1). The prize was handed out by a jury that included filmmakers Lav Diaz and Ritu Sarin, among others. The citation described the film as a “vivid character study, a powerful allegory of national trauma, an urgent dissection of the fascist mindset and how it persists.”
Despite a year marred by restrictions and social distancing, the Singapore Prize 2019 made its return on Wednesday with an in-person awards ceremony at Victoria Theatre. Eight of the 12 prize winners were first-time recipients, including rma cureess (Rama Suresh) in the Readers’ Favourite category for her book on Gedung Kuning.
The Singapore Prize aims to encourage engagement with Singapore’s history broadly understood, and to make the complexities of the city-state’s history accessible to non-academic audiences. It also seeks to promote understanding of Singapore’s place in the world. Unlike other prizes, the Singapore Prize is open to publications in all languages and categories, spanning fiction and non-fiction, as long as it has clear historical themes. In addition to a cash prize, the winner in each category will receive a customised trophy and a 12-month gift code for audiobook platform StoryTel.
